On Wednesday the 1st of March our Education Officer led the local K12 class and their teachers on a historical walk of Walla Walla. We viewed many old buildings around town, such as the first Public School established in 1885, the site of the Power House, Chaff Mill, Train Station, station masters house, Mackie’s store, the old bank, Literary Institute, Soldier’s Memorial Hall and Lieschke’s garage.
The children listened to many stories and viewed pictures to show them how buildings looked before they were converted into houses, such as the Butchery and old Post Office. Our tour finished at the Old Bakery, where the children learnt about the history of the building and viewed the significant F. Metter’s and Co. ‘Peel oven’ that was used to bake bread and other goods for the local community.
Thanks so much to Lorna of Thistle Café and Walla Wares for allowing the children inside to view the historical oven and see the pictures of it in use.
