Experience The History of Walla Walla EST. 1868
The township of Walla Walla is situated in the LGA of Greater Hume Shire in southern New South Wales. It is approximately 38 kilometres north of Albury-Wodonga and 100 kilometres south of Wagga Wagga. According to the 2011 census the population was 918.
The township was established in 1868/69 when early German and Wendish settlers arrived in the area via wagon train. This is known locally as “the Trek” and a replica wagon can be viewed next to the Zion Church, which is the largest Lutheran Church in New South Wales.
To the North of Walla Walla is Morgan’s Lookout, associated with the notorious bushranger “Mad Dan” Morgan. The area is full of natural beauty, such as the Gum Swamp and our own “outdoor museum”.
The Museum cares for and displays the “Old School House” collection as well as a number of private collections comprising of social and personal histories, artefacts, historical books and documents, photographs, business history, textiles including ethnic and 19th century Victorian clothing and replicas. Collection items are used to tell the stories pertaining to the early settlement of Walla Walla and district.
We have an extensive curriculum-based school Education program, which includes education outreach. Other services include the operation of local history tours and research services to the general public.
